You’ve already impressed me… yep, that’s right, I’m talking about YOU! If you are here then that means you are serious about showcasing yourself as a rockin’ educator and getting that dream job (or at least the dream for the moment) that will allow you to do what you are called to do…and that’s teach!
So first I’ve got to congratulate you on your dedication and passion, it shines bright my teacher friend :) We need more teachers like you for our students, which is why I want to help you GET THE JOB you are seeking.
Ok, now that you’ve shown your commitment, let’s talk details. What’s it going to take to actually land you the next teaching job you are meant for?
That, my friend, is the wisdom I bring to you... a teaching portfolio!
A few years back as I was beginning my teaching journey, I designed the first version of this portfolio I am bringing to you now. It became the tool that sealed the deal for me, so to speak, in landing my first teaching job. Because it was such a lifesaver to me, I decided to share it with my teaching peeps on TpT, where hundreds of other teachers used it to land jobs as well. (Score!)
Since then, I’ve gained a wealth of tidbits to enhance the first design I created; from a combination of personal teaching experience, sitting on interview committees, and my own research.
But let’s back up, maybe you are wondering what a teaching portfolio even is. So let me explain.
A teaching portfolio is your golden ticket, your very best friend when it comes to preparing for and taking part in the interview process. To put it simply, the teaching portfolio is a collection of evidence that showcases your very best asset...YOU!
This is the tool that is going to help you sell yourself as a teacher. If you are a teacher just beginning your journey, then this is a tool that is going to help you share your vision for your future classroom. And if you've been around the schoolyard a time or two already, so to speak? Then a portfolio is going to provide an insightful look at your development in teaching over time.
As if all of this isn't reason enough to create a portfolio, doing so offers you another huge benefit...it's perhaps the best exercise in preparation for your interview. Simply the act of creating the portfolio helps you think deeper about your vision and practice, as well as all of the details that go into creating an effective learning environment for your students. This will help you feel more prepared and comfortable in talking about your vision and ideas during the interview.
So, now that you know what a portfolio is and why it is so important to have if you are serious about landing your dream job, let's talk about how to create one!
Lucky for you, I've taken the guess work out of this process for you. [you're welcome! :)]
I've created a template you can use that will highlight you as a teaching professional in all of the areas that you need to demonstrate your ability to shine.
Now, when I say template, what I really mean are 2 TEMPLATES, in 3 DIFFERENT STYLES. Yep, you've got choices here! You can choose the template and style that best matches your personal need.
I designed the classic Rockin' Portfolio template to make it easy on you. This is based on the original design that's already helped hundreds of teachers land their dream job. But now, I've revamped the older version and given it a complete makeover. More modern, more polished, and fitting for ALL kinds of teachers, regardless of subject area or grade level. Plus, it's black and white printer-friendly. WOOT WOOT!
In this pre-made design, there are (8) Main Topics included, with pre-made Subtopic titles within each Main Topic. This is what I mean when I say I've taken the guess work out for you. Literally, all you need to do is plug in your documentation, your evidence, and your ideas on each Subtopic page.
And if you want to take it one step further in the personalization department, you should know that I also made a DIY Portfolio template available to you, in addition to the pre-made template I've just explained. This version allows you to customize your portfolio even further, by adding additional Subtopic Titles that you feel are important to highlight about yourself.
If you are looking for COMPLETE customization, you can use the Blank templates, which are 100% editable. So add whatever Main Topics and Subtopic Titles you want.
The possibilities with this resource are endless for you.
Wanna see the portfolio in action? Here's a [tinyyy] peak inside mine...
The full version of my portfolio is over 50 pages (evidence and documentation add up FAST!). But this gives you a glimpse of what the final product can look like. I share a more detailed look at each section of my portfolio in the Rockin' Portfolio E-Course (more on that below!).
If you use my Rockin' portfolio templates, then you'll also get access to a Font Guide and Getting Started Guide --- so all you're technical questions about the portfolio will be answered!
But if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed about the process...unsure of where to even begin, or what to include, or how to make sure you are including everything possible that will help you truly shine in your own way... then don't fret, my teacher friend!
In this e-course, I will walk you through each of the pre-made Main Topic and Subtopic sections and show you what you can include that will help you sell yourself in the best way. I'll give you an inside look at my personal teaching portfolio and hopefully help you jumpstart your "idea train" for how you can make your portfolio totally unique to you.
Want to dress up your presentation even more? I've got you covered!
If you buy the e-course bundle, you're also going to get a few pretty awesome bonuses that go along with it. Like designer versions of the portfolio cover for each style template...that's 300 OPTIONS to choose from for your portfolio cover!
There's also coordinating resume templates and bonus resource guides included in this bundle.
You. Will. Love. It.
I believe you are going to love this e-course SO much that I created a mini e-course for you to access the first module... completely FREE. [Click for Details!]
So once you've created your totally rockin' portfolio, I've got a few pointers for how to go about using it.
The most important piece of advice I can give you is this: know. your. stuff.
What I mean by this is to be familiar with your portfolio so much so that you can quickly and easily access any of its contents in the moment you need to. There's nothing worse than having this super impressive portfolio, but not being comfortable with it enough to use to its fullest potential.
With that said, my second piece of advice is to be bold in using your rockin' creation. Don't wait for the interviewer to ask to see your portfolio. Take the initiative to show it off during the appropriate moments. Use it as a true supporting tool for you, a visual representation to back up the words that you are saying.
And on that note, don't expect the interviewer to sit and look at the entire portfolio. Unfortunately there may not be enough time for this, and it's not the true purpose anyways. You may be asked to leave the portfolio so they can have a deeper look, which is great! But more often than not, the portfolio will be used primarily as a supporting tool for you. So make the most of it during the opportunities that you have!
So, there you have it! My wisdom to you...land your dream teaching job with a rockin' teaching portfolio that shows off your best asset: YOU!
Now that you've got the inside scoop on how to get the job, it's time to get movin'. Check out the Rockin' Teacher Portfolio here, or get the step-by-step Rockin' Portfolio E-Course and I'll walk you through everything you need to know to create a portfolio that will land you the job.
Set yourself apart, get the job, and go teach the world!
